Eating the right foods is important to help fuel the body and help with weight loss results.

However, knowing what these foods are is not always straightforward. Luckily, an expert has shared her top tips with GB News.

She said the best advice for anyone wanting to be healthier and lose weight is to opt for whole foods and avoid processed items where possible.

Joanna explained: “To do it from a healthy perspective, as much as possible, [slimmers should] be eating the best quality foods that they can reasonably afford. Because that’s our challenge nowadays, right?

“We’re looking at whole foods and natural foods. That’s the first thing to look at, avoiding as much chemical processed food as possible.”

Processed foods are often convenient and affordable, but they can cause havoc to our bodies. The expert suggested ditching these as much as possible can be the quickest way to get results.

She said: “To really start with, if you can get off of sugar, junk, rubbish and on to eating natural foods, you will see a massive change immediately.”

A study published in the National Institute of Health found ultra-processed foods lead to “accelerated calorie intake and weight gain”.

While this will not be surprising, consumers may not realise just how many extra calories these meals and snacks can add. Whole foods that can help with a weight loss journey include meat, fish, vegetables, fruit, nuts and seeds.

These foods are often high in fibre and protein, both of which are key to reducing appetite and helping dieters to eat more without consuming as many calories.

Joanna also offered advice for women on how they can slim down while going through menopause and into their 50s and 60s.

She shared her own experience, stating: “Keeping a journal and changing the kind of exercise I did and the kind of foods I ate [made a difference].

“In fact, I found I had to eat a little bit more for my mind and for my body and change the type of exercise I was doing. Per decade, one has to change and I’m sure my 60s will be a whole other journey.

“We all know that we need movement and some kind of cardiovascular activity. That is super, super good for our heart and lungs. We mustn’t devalue that, it’s absolutely important.

“So, enjoy a good brisk walk or whatever type of activity a person feels comfortable with. But that has its limits, particularly as we get older and when it comes to weight loss and managing our weight.”
