The City is offering a wide range of events and activities throughout June to promote physical activity

Prince Rupert is participating in the “2025 Community Better Challenge,” a national initiative encouraging Canadians to try new activities and get moving throughout June.

In collaboration with several local organizations, the City’s Recreation and Community Services Department is offering a wide range of free events and activities all month to help residents stay active and potentially win the competition.

“To help rally and win the grand prize this year, we need as many people as possible to participate! Residents, organizations and the City can log active hours throughout the month to potentially win up to $100,000 toward local facilities and programming,” said the City in a recent press release.

The ParticipAction challenge is part of a national competition to crown Canada’s most active community, and Prince Rupert is going all in. The local lineup of free programming includes activities for all ages and fitness levels, from high-energy sports to relaxing, creative sessions.

Among the offerings are carpet bowling, tai chi, rugby and lacrosse sessions, junior golf, volleyball, trail walks, cricket, floor hockey, and chair yoga. Popular activities such as Zumba, pickleball, swimming, art, knitting and crochet meetups, and more will also take place.

The North Coast Mountain Bike Association (NCMBA) is one of the several local supporting organizations this year. The group will host a “Pop Up Bike Park” in the Civic Centre arena on select Mondays in June from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m.

“One of our club’s mission statements is to encourage participation in recreational cycling so we are thrilled to partner with the City of Prince Rupert through Participaction,” said Craig Rimmer, board member of NCMBA. “Movement, exercise, and organized recreation are so important to any community and the North Coast Mountain Bike Association is excited at the chance to contribute in a fun and meaningful way.”

Individuals and organizations can register their activity throughout June on ParticiAction’s website. The more active minutes logged under Prince Rupert’s postal code, the higher the city’s chances of being named Canada’s Most Active Community and earning the prize money.

In addition to the national winner, there is a prize for the most active community in each province and territory, as well as organization-level prizes.
