Lizzo Shares What She Eats Now vs. Before Her Weight Loss
Lizzo is breaking down how her diet has shifted during her health journey.
In a new video, the “Truth Hurts” singer told Women’s Health about how she fuels her body and that her philosophy behind food has been “discovering what my body wants.”
“If your body wants salty, crunchy chips, go eat some chips or eat a pickle. If your body wants, eat them cookies. If your body wants bread, eat the bread. If your body wants butter, eat the butter,” she said in the interview published July 8.
Lizzo said her “complicated” relationship with eating has come with highs and lows.
“There have been times when I’ve undernourished myself. There have been times where I was bingeing,” she said. “I feel like right now when I intuitively eat and listen to my body, that always works out for me.”
Nowadays, she says she avoids “nasty food” and anything that “don’t taste good,” adding, “If it has a lot of chemicals in it, that ain’t doing s— for you. Avoid those kinds of foods like the plague.”
Lizzo then broke down her go-to meals throughout the day starting with breakfast for which she describes recently making the switch from sweet to savory. She explained that after reaching for sweets in the morning, her blood sugar would spike and then majorly drop.
The morning she filmed the interview, Lizzo said she ate two scrambled eggs and a cup of bone broth with Celtic sea salt, which she called “fabulous.”
“My go-to lunch used to be like salad,” Lizzo recalled of her previous eating habits. “F— that shit.”
“Get a carb in there,” she continued. “Because by the time noon comes, you need to take control. You need to remind your body you’re alive. You’re happy. You’re having a good time. Your body loves carbs. Carbs are the secret to happiness.”
Lizzo’s carb-filled lunches range from sandwiches to dishes featuring bread and rice. She explained that her “go-to lunch is usually carb-y protein-y and flavorful.”
Lizzo’s meals for the day stop after her 5 p.m. dinner, she said, adding that she has gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD, and gets “very burpy” if she eats “super late.”
“I typically love to do a really protein-rich dinner or I love a soup,” she said.
In terms of snacks, Lizzo considered herself a “recovering chip-o-holic.” Nowadays, she opts for foods that “are going to satisfy me.” Among her favorites, she listed hard-boiled eggs, tuna salad with crackers and lettuce wraps with a form of protein.
On July 3, Lizzo shared another glimpse into her routine on Instagram. She revealed she added animal protein back into her diet, trains three times a week, does cardio, uses the sauna daily and hired a chef to help her meal prep.
The singer noted that she also cut out sugary coffee drinks, full-fat sodas and potato chips.
“I quit drinking for the longest… (but I’m drinking again cus I earned it!),” she added.
“I play pickleball and hike and walk on the beach and move my body and dance and drink water. I detox! Once a month! I also get holistic body work done, wood therapy, and lymphatic massage,” she wrote in the caption.
The Grammy-winner has been open about her weight loss over the years. She recently told Trisha Paytas on a June episode of the “Just Trish” podcast that she tried “just about everything” in an attempt to lose weight. She maintained that the best outlet for her has been changing up her diet and lifestyle.
