1000-lb Sisters star Amanda Halterman has lost a lot of weight since having bariatric surgery in March 2023, but now a devastating breakup threatens to derail her journey. The beloved series, which premiered in 2020, centers around the extraordinary weight-loss journeys of Tammy Slaton and Amy Slaton, but their sister, Amanda, has also lost some weight. Amanda didn’t appear on the show until season 4 because she was going through a divorce. Though she wasn’t on the show during the first few years, she has always been close to Tammy, Amy, and her siblings.
Amanda grew up with her siblings in Shawneetown, Illinois. Unlike her sisters, Tammy and Amy, Amanda didn’t struggle with her weight growing up; she was always the thin one. It wasn’t until after she got married and had four children that the 1000-lb Sisters season 5 star started gaining weight. After years of struggling, Amanda had her second bariatric surgery in March 2023, and she looks like a different person. She had found love again after her painful divorce, but that relationship ended in the most painful, heartbreaking way.

Amanda Thought RJ Was The One
She Was Head Over Heels
Since Amanda lost weight, she dated a few men, but nothing clicked until she met RJ in 2023. In February, Amanda posted a now-deleted photo of her and her man on TikTok, with the song “Little Life” by Cordelia playing in the background. In the image, which is taken at the beach, RJ’s face is partially visible as he kisses the back of Amanda’s head. Amanda’s caption reads, “@RJV I love life with you, Can’t wait to be back on the beach!!”
1000-lb Sisters fans took to the post’s comment section to express how happy they are for Amanda. One person wrote, “Hell yeah! You deserve it Queen!!,” while another wrote, “You deserve the love you give out […] always taking care of everyone!” Amanda’s role on the show has often been that of a loving, dedicated sister who is willing to go to war for the people she loves, and fans have taken notice.
Little did Amanda or the fans know that the relationship wasn’t long for this world.
RJ Just Ghosted Amanda
It’s Not The First Time
In June, Amanda posted a TikTok explaining her boyfriend, RJ, had ghosted her completely. According to Amanda’s TikTok, she hadn’t seen him since May 1. He had left town to meet his family and he never came back. They were supposed to meet in Kentucky in late May but never showed. Amanda tried contacting him, but he wouldn’t respond. She also tried contacting members of his family whose numbers she had, and none of them responded to her either. He just disappeared without a trace.
During the clip, Amanda also reveals that this isn’t the first time RJ has ghosted her, though this time it has lasted longer.
This is especially painful because Amanda moved from Kentucky to Florida to be with RJ, leaving her family behind to follow her heart. The post has garnered 32.8K likes, and the caption reads, “#breakup #itisfinished accepting applications for my future husband.” She also explained that she had moved back to Kentucky and was staying with her sister and 1000-lb Sister star, Amy.
Amanda’s Has Never Been Lucky In Love
She Went Through A Rough Divorce
While filming 1000-lb Sisters season 4, Amanda quietly finalized her divorce from her ex-husband, Jason Halterman. Though the couple amicably parted ways in August 2020, the couple’s divorce wasn’t finalized until two years later, in August 2022. Jason is the brother of Michael Halterman, who was married to Amy until their recent divorce. Amanda and Jason were married in December 1998 and had four sons together during their 22 years of marriage.
All of Amanda and Jason’s sons are adults now, and only one of them was under 18 at the time of his parents’ divorce.

Will Amanda Stay On Track?
Her Second Bariatric Surgery
Amanda reportedly already had bariatric surgery for the first time in 2014, long before appearing on 1000-lb Sisters. Amanda lost over 300 pounds after the surgery but found herself gaining the weight back. In March, Amanda posted it was the first anniversary of her surgery, or “surgeversary,” where she looked dramatically thinner than when she first appeared on the show.
1000-Lb. Sisters season 5 features a scene in which Amanda and her other sister, Misty Wentworth, spoke to Tammy, Amy, and their brother, Chris Combs, about potentially undergoing weight loss surgery. “Me and Misty’s been going to see Dr. Smith,” Amanda tells her siblings. Dr. Smith was Tammy and Chris’s bariatric surgeon. During the discussion, the Slatons discuss their fears about the weight loss procedure, which can include complications and death.
Since Tammy, Amy, and Chris have all undergone the surgery, they understand that the procedure can be very dangerous.
Thankfully, Amanda and Misty made it through the surgery with flying colors. Though it’s not known how much weight Amanda has lost, she looks significantly thinner than before surgery. Though she’s hurting from her recent breakup, the 1000-lb Sisters star shouldn’t let it derail her from her weight loss journey.
