Fibre-rich drink before meals helps weight loss and suppress appetite

Experts say a quick-to-make pre-meal drink could aid in weight loss. This beverage, which is growing in popularity on social media due to its results, can be made within seconds.

It works by prolonging the sensation of fullness, possibly preventing over-consumption and unnecessary snacking – assisting you in adhering to a healthy diet.

All you need is a glass of water and a spoonful of chai seeds. You could add a slice of lemon for flavour and additional health benefits.

Originating from the salvia hispanica plant, chia seeds have been utilised since Aztec times, reportedly being a staple for warriors for survival.

Chia seeds are brimming with fibre and protein, both known for promoting gut health and curbing hunger. Due to the longer period needed for fibre breakdown, it inherently helps you feel satiated for extended periods of time.

Consuming a glass of chia seed-infused water 30 minutes prior to meals potentially aids in reducing intake and maintaining portion control.

Registered Dietitian and Nutritionist Dr Tara Collingwood supported this view, stating: “Chia seeds can prevent hunger because they take a longer time to digest.”

The health expert added: “Chia is satiating, and can assist in preventing ravenous hunger and eating more later in the day, as long as someone is mindful about portions and pays attention to their body telling them if they are hungry or full.”

A mere tablespoon added to your water could help keep you feeling full and prevent overeating. Consuming chia seed water in the morning especially could enhance your digestion and improve bowel movements.

One study discovered that individuals who consumed 7-14g of chia seeds in their yoghurt at breakfast felt fuller and ate less, compared to those who had yoghurt without the seeds.

In a separate study, researchers found that an increased intake of chia seeds could lead to reduced visceral fat.

Meanwhile, a review in the Journal of Medical and Health Sciences concluded that chia seeds, when consumed alongside a low-calorie diet, resulted in “significant weight loss”.

While these studies appear promising, further human trials are necessary.

It’s crucial to remember that although incorporating chia seeds into your diet may not directly result in weight loss on its own, it can still be a beneficial supplement as part of a healthy and balanced diet.

It’s essential to drink plenty of water whenever you consume chia seeds due to their high fibre content. This will aid digestion and reduce your risk of constipation, gas, and other digestive issues caused by consuming too much fibre without sufficient water.

Chia seeds can be made more enjoyable and safer to eat by soaking them in water, as consuming them raw and in large quantities could pose a choking hazard.

Before making any significant changes to your lifestyle or diet, it’s always advisable to consult with your doctor to ensure that chia seeds are appropriate for you.
